2017 Zag Field Hockey / NFHCA Division II National Scholar Athlete

GILBERT, AZ - Senior Sydney McCarthy has been named as the 2017 Zag Field Hockey / NFHCA Division II National Scholar Athlete.  The National Scholar Athlete Award is presented to the 2017 Division II NFHCA All-American honoree who earns the highest cumulative GPA Through the first semester of the 2017-18 academic year.

A 2017 NFHCA First Team All-American selection, McCarthy helped lead East Stroudsburg to its 3rd straight NCAA Tournament appearance and a spot in the national semifinals.  McCarthy led ESU in points (31), recording 10 goals and 11 assists.  The center back leaves East Stroudsburg tied for 6th on the single-season assist list and tied for 10th in career assists (18).  She was selected as the 2017 PSAC Defensive Athlete of the Year, was a 2017 First Team All-PSAC selection, and was the NFHCA's 2017 Division II Honda Award nominee.  McCarthy was also selected as a 2017 PSAC Fall Top 10 honoree, as the 2017 NCAA Division II "Elite 90" Award recipient, and as a PSAC "Champion Scholar".  She was named to the 2017 NFHCA Division II National Academic Squad and was selected as a 2017 NFHCA Division II Scholar of Distinction for maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.90 or higher.

A key contributor since stepping on the ESU campus, McCarthy garnered All-PSAC 2nd Team honors in 2016, was recognized as a PSAC "Champion Scholar" in 2016, and was named as the NCAA Division II "Elite 90" Award recipient in 2015.
